Guides to choosing a lamp
How tall should a bedside lamp be?Measure from the mattress, not the floor, and aim the shade at your shoulder.
Which bulb gives the warmest light? Why 2700K, why under 8 watts, and the bulbs we use in every photograph.
Why no two glazes matchWhat happens to a glaze at 1280 degrees, and how to read the one on your lamp.
About Gloam ceramic lamps
Every Gloam base starts as a ball of Victorian stoneware on the wheel in our Castlemaine studio. It is trimmed by hand, fired once, dipped in glaze and fired again to 1280 degrees, which is why the speckle, the crackle and the way each glaze breaks change from lamp to lamp.
The shades are Belgian linen, pleated or stretched by hand, on a solid brass fitting. Each lamp takes an E27 bulb and comes with a two-metre braided cloth cord and an inline switch, tested and tagged by a licensed electrician.
Choose Ferris or Cap for a bedside table, Gourd for a sideboard, and Column where the light needs height, beside a reading chair or on a hall console.
Questions about the lamps
How long does a made-to-order glaze take?
About four weeks. Your base is glazed and fired in the next kiln load, then wired, tested and packed. Lamps in their own glaze are in stock and leave within three working days.
Which bulb do the lamps take?
An E27 bulb. A warm 2700K LED of 6 to 8 watts keeps the shade cool and the light the colour you see in our photographs.
Will my lamp look exactly like the photographs?
Close, but never exactly. Each base is thrown and glazed by hand, so the speckle, the crackle and the way the glaze breaks differ a little from lamp to lamp.
Can I buy a matching pair?
Yes. Pairs are glazed and fired side by side in the same kiln load, so they match as closely as handmade lamps can, and cost five per cent less than two singles.
