Care
Dust the base with a dry cloth, and brush the shade with a soft brush or a vacuum on its lowest setting. The brass darkens with time; polish it back if you prefer it bright. Full care guide

How every Column is made
Three weeks from a ball of clay to a lamp in a box, most of it drying and in the kiln.
3.6 kg of clay
Thrown
The base is thrown on the wheel, then trimmed by hand once it is leather-hard.
Dipped twice
Glazed
After a first firing it is dipped by hand, thick enough to break over each throwing line.
1280 degrees
Fired
A second firing melts the glaze into the clay. Every kiln load comes out a little different.
Tested and tagged
Wired
Fitted with brass and a cloth cord, then tested and tagged by a licensed electrician.
What Column is made of

Stoneware, glazed by hand
Thrown from 3.6 kg of Victorian clay, dipped twice and fired to 1280 degrees.

A solid brass neck
Unlacquered, so it darkens slowly with handling. Polish it back if you like it bright.

Belgian linen shade
Pleated or stretched by hand over a brass frame, so the light comes through warm and even.
On an oak console in the front hall, dusk
Column in tenmoku, with a warm 2700K bulb. Made for consoles, halls and reading chairs.

From the studio
A tall cylinder is the hardest shape to throw, and the one most likely to slump. Tenmoku suits it: the glaze runs thin over every ring and turns rust where the clay shows through.

The tenmoku runs from black to rust where it thins at the top, and no two are the same. It is the best reading light in the house.

Tall enough to light a page from the armchair without a floor lamp. The packaging was the best I have seen for something this fragile.

We bought a pair for either side of the hall console. They look like they have always been there.

Worth it for the glaze alone. The studio emailed photos of my base before it was wired, which was a lovely touch.

Questions about Column
Which bulb does Column take?
An E27 bulb. We suggest a warm 2700K LED of 6 to 8 watts, which keeps the shade cool and the light the colour you see in our photographs.
Can I dim Column?
Yes, with a dimmable LED bulb and a plug-in dimmer, or a dimmable smart bulb. The switch on the cord turns it on and off.
How long does a made-to-order glaze take?
About four weeks. Column is kept in stock in tenmoku; in any other glaze, your base is glazed and fired in the next kiln load, then wired and tested before it ships.
Will my lamp look exactly like the photographs?
Close, but never exactly. Each base is thrown and glazed by hand, so the speckle, the crackle and the way the glaze breaks differ a little from lamp to lamp.
What if it arrives damaged?
Send us a photo within seven days and we send a replacement from the next kiln load, at no cost to you.
