Three Australian hardwoods, and where each one comes from

Every piece is made in the timber you choose, from boards picked for it in the workshop. Choose one to look closer at its grain.

Deep red-brown and the hardest of the three. It darkens towards burgundy over the years.

Burgundy growth bandJarrah runs from brick red to burgundy across a single board. Oil brings the bands out, and years of light deepen them.

Where it comes from

Salvaged jarrah and storm-felled marri, never cut for us

About 70 per cent of our jarrah has been a building before. Our marri comes from farm trees brought down by storms or cleared for fences, milled by one family in the Blackwood Valley.

Where our timber comes from

Old weathered jarrah beams stacked under a corrugated iron lean-to against a limestone wall, one beam planed to show the red-brown timber inside
Jarrah from the wharf shedsBeams from Fremantle wharf sheds and wool stores, up to 120 years old. Under the grey, the timber is still deep red-brown, and harder than the day it was cut.
Rough-sawn marri boards stacked with spacers to air-dry in an open shed at the edge of a eucalypt forest, a marri log beside them
Marri from the Blackwood ValleySawn into boards and air-dried under cover for two years, one year for every 25 mm, before it comes to the workshop.

How a Kerf piece is made, by one maker from start to finish

The maker who cuts the first joint fits the last wedge, then signs and numbers the underside.

  1. Chosen

Salvaged jarrah beams and storm-felled marri, planed back to see what is inside.

  2. Cut

Every joint marked with a knife and cut by hand, so the parts fit to the shaving.

  3. Jointed

Tenons, wedges and dovetails, glued and pinned with timber. No screws in the frames.

  4. Oiled

Three coats of hardwax oil, rubbed in by hand over three days.

  5. Delivered

Wrapped in blankets and carried in by the makers across Perth.

Joinery you can see, and no screws in the frames

Each piece is held together by its joints. We leave them showing, so you can see exactly how it is made.

Made to your size, or drawn for you from scratch

The Hamelin table is made to any length from 160 to 300 cm at the same price per centimetre. For anything else, a desk, a longer bench or a twelve-seat table, send us the room and we draw it.

Furniture for the dining room, the living room and the hall

Founded in Fremantle in 2008 by a boatbuilder and a heritage joiner

Tess Arden learned to steam and fit hull planks in the Fremantle boatyards. Callum Reid spent ten years restoring old buildings, and saw how much good jarrah went to the tip. They opened Kerf in an 1890s limestone warehouse in the West End, to turn that timber into furniture.

We would rather make fewer pieces, and have every one of them outlive us.

Questions about Kerf furniture

How long does a piece take to make?

Between 8 and 12 weeks from your order, depending on the piece and the timber. One piece of each design is kept ready to ship, and leaves the workshop within a week.

Will my piece look like the photographs?

Close, but every board is different. Jarrah varies from brick red to deep burgundy, marri carries its gum veins wherever the tree put them, and Tasmanian oak ranges from straw to pale pink.

Is salvaged timber as strong as new?

Yes. Old jarrah has dried slowly for decades and is often harder and more stable than new timber. We cut away any split, borer or bolt hole before it reaches a piece.

Can I have a different size?

The Hamelin table is made to any length from 160 to 300 cm, at the same price per centimetre. Other pieces can be made to measure as a commission.

Do you deliver outside Perth?

Yes, across Australia. Perth metro is free and we bring it in ourselves. Regional WA and interstate freight is priced on each product page, crated and carried in by a furniture carrier.
