How every Leeuwin is made

About 9 weeks from your order, by one maker, in our Fremantle workshop.

  1. Chosen

Boards picked for colour and grain, matched across every face.

  2. Cut

Each joint marked with a knife and sawn to the line by hand.

  3. Jointed

The legs pass up through the arms, glued and pinned.

  4. Oiled

Three coats of hardwax oil, rubbed in by hand over three days.

From the maker

I drew Leeuwin for my father, who wanted somewhere to put his tea. The arms are nine centimetres wide, and the legs come up through them so you can see how it is held together.

  • The arm takes a full mug and a paperback. The leather has gone soft and dark in a year, exactly as they said it would.

  • Low and deep, and the wool cushions are firm in the right way. Worth the nine weeks.

  • We visited the workshop to choose the boards for the arms. You can see the gum veins run from the front leg into the arm.

Questions about the Leeuwin

How long does the Leeuwin take to make?

About 9 weeks from your order. Jarrah with wool cushions is ready to ship and leaves the workshop within a week.

Will mine look like the photographs?

Close, but every board is different. The grain, the gum veins and the depth of colour change from piece to piece, which is the point of solid timber.

Are the cushions removable?

Yes. Both cushions are loose, and the covers unzip for cleaning. The leather softens and darkens with use.

Can it be made to a different size?

Yes, as a commission. Send us the size and we will draw it and quote within a week.

How do I look after an oiled finish?

Wipe spills straight away and dry the surface. Once a year, rub in a thin coat of the oil from the care kit. A mark can be sanded lightly and oiled away.
