About Kerf hardwood furniture
Every Kerf piece is solid timber throughout: no veneer, no board, no screws in the frame. Jarrah is salvaged from Fremantle wharf sheds, wool stores and old homes; marri comes from storm-felled and cleared farm trees, milled at a family sawmill in the Blackwood Valley; Tasmanian oak comes from certified regrowth forests.
Choose jarrah for the deepest colour and the hardest surface, marri for honey timber with dark gum veins, and Tasmanian oak for a pale, quiet room and the lowest price. Each piece is finished in three coats of hardwax oil, so a mark can be sanded and oiled away at home.
Questions about choosing a piece
What size dining table do I need?
Allow 60 cm of table edge for each person, plus a chair at each end. A 180 cm table seats six, 220 cm seats eight and 260 cm seats ten. Leave 90 cm between the table and the wall so people can walk behind a seated guest.
Jarrah, marri or Tasmanian oak?
Jarrah is the darkest and hardest, and suits a room with pale walls and floors. Marri is honey with dark gum veins and hides daily marks well. Tasmanian oak is pale and costs the least.
Does solid timber move?
A little, with the seasons. Our tops are fixed with buttons that let the timber move across its width, so it never splits. The timber is dried to suit Australian homes before we start.
Can I return a piece?
Pieces bought ready to ship can be returned within 30 days. Made-to-order pieces are built for you, which is why the timber samples cost only $20.
