Size your Hamelin table to your dining room
Enter the room, wall to wall, then set the length. The plan draws the table, the chairs and a 90 cm walkway to scale, and turns amber where the room is too tight.

How every Hamelin is made
About 10 to 12 weeks from your order, by one maker, in our Fremantle workshop.

Chosen
Boards for one top come from one beam or one tree, so the colour runs end to end.

Cut
Each joint marked with a knife and sawn to the line by hand.

Jointed
Four through-tenons, each wedged and planed flush with the top.

Oiled
Three coats of hardwax oil, rubbed in by hand over three days.

From the maker
Every Hamelin top is glued up from boards out of the same beam or the same tree, so the colour runs from end to end. The wedges at the corners are the last thing I fit, and the first thing people touch.

We ordered it at 240 cm after measuring the room with the sizer. Ten adults sat at it on Christmas Day with space to pass the plates.

The gum veins in the marri are better in person. Tess and Callum carried it in, levelled it on our old floorboards and left us the oil.

It came crated to Brisbane without a mark on it. The wedged corners are the detail everyone asks about.

Eleven weeks, as promised. A small water ring came out with the care kit in five minutes, which says a lot for the oil finish.

Questions about the Hamelin
How long does the Hamelin take to make?
About 10 to 12 weeks from your order. Jarrah, 220 cm is ready to ship and leaves the workshop within a week.
Will mine look like the photographs?
Close, but every board is different. The grain, the gum veins and the depth of colour change from piece to piece, which is the point of solid timber.
How many people does it seat?
Allow 60 cm of table edge per person, plus one at each end: 180 cm seats six, 220 cm seats eight, 260 cm seats ten. The sizer above works it out for any length.
Can it be made to a different size?
Yes, to any length from 160 to 300 cm at the same price per centimetre. For a different depth or height, ask about a commission.
How do I look after an oiled finish?
Wipe spills straight away and dry the surface. Once a year, rub in a thin coat of the oil from the care kit. A mark can be sanded lightly and oiled away.
