How every Swan is made
About 12 weeks from your order, by one maker, in our Fremantle workshop.

Chosen
Boards picked for colour and grain, matched across every face.

Cut
Each joint marked with a knife and sawn to the line by hand.

Jointed
About sixty dovetails, pared to fit with a chisel.

Oiled
Three coats of hardwax oil, rubbed in by hand over three days.

The Swan in marri, holding glasses, plates and records under a sash window.

From the maker
There are about sixty dovetails in a Swan, cut with a saw and a chisel. I mark them from the boards themselves, so the tails line up with the grain across the top.

We bought the marri one that was ready to ship and had it in our living room inside a week. The dovetails are like jewellery.

Twelve weeks and a crate to Melbourne. It holds every glass and plate we own, and the doors close with a soft puff of air.

Paler than I pictured from my screen, so order the samples. Beautifully made, and the cutlery drawer is worth adding.

Questions about the Swan
How long does the Swan take to make?
About 12 weeks from your order. Marri is ready to ship and leaves the workshop within a week.
Will mine look like the photographs?
Close, but every board is different. The grain, the gum veins and the depth of colour change from piece to piece, which is the point of solid timber.
What fits inside?
Each of the two bays has two adjustable shelves, deep enough for dinner plates and tall glasses, or a row of records.
Can it be made to a different size?
Yes, as a commission. Send us the size and we will draw it and quote within a week.
How do I look after an oiled finish?
Wipe spills straight away and dry the surface. Once a year, rub in a thin coat of the oil from the care kit. A mark can be sanded lightly and oiled away.
