How every Lobethal tumbler is made

About eleven minutes at the furnace for each tumbler, then a night in the kiln.

  1. Gathered

Molten glass is gathered from the furnace at 1,100 degrees on the end of a steel pipe.

  2. Shaped

Rolled through crushed coloured glass, blown into a cherrywood mould, then the rim is flared with steel jacks.

  3. Cooled

Cooled slowly overnight in a kiln so the glass is strong, then checked one by one.

  4. Wrapped

Wrapped in tissue and paper pulp at the shop, and replaced free if one breaks on the way.

Kit Novak, glassblower, in Lobethal, in the Adelaide Hills

Made by Kit Novak in Lobethal

I gather the glass, blow it into a wooden mould I carved myself, then shape the rim by hand. The bubbles are air caught as the colour goes in. I leave them in, because they show the glass was made by a person.

Lobethal tumblers: water poured at lunch

Water poured at lunch

Heavy enough not to tip on a garden table, small enough to fit four in one hand when you clear. Water at noon, wine by three.

  • We use them for everything, water at breakfast and wine at night. The blue throws light across the table at lunch and the children fight over who gets which one.

  • Bought the mixed four for my sister and kept a set for us. Every glass is slightly different, which is the point. They arrived wrapped like eggs.

  • Heavy in the hand, thin at the rim. The olive is softer than I expected and goes with every plate we own.

  • Lovely glasses. One had a bigger bubble near the base than the other, which the card says is normal. I have come to like it.

Questions about the Lobethal tumblers

Or ask us at the shop, or by email. We answer within a working day.

Are they dishwasher safe?

Yes, on the top rack. Hand washing keeps the rims bright for longer, and they are not for the microwave.

Why does each glass look different?

Each one is blown by hand, so the height, the bubbles and the depth of colour vary a little from glass to glass. Two glasses from the same set will not match exactly.

What happens if a glass breaks in the post?

Send us a photograph within 14 days and Kit blows a replacement in the next batch, at no cost.

What is in a mixed set?

A set of four is one of each colour. Sets of two and six are chosen from all four colours, so no colour appears more than twice.
