How every Willunga dinner set is made

Three weeks from wet clay to a fired plate, with two firings in between.

  1. Thrown

Each plate and bowl is thrown on the wheel from speckled stoneware, then trimmed to a foot ring when leather-hard.

  2. Glazed

Dipped in glaze by hand, leaving the foot as bare clay.

  3. Fired

Fired twice, the second time to 1,280 degrees, which makes it strong enough for every day.

  4. Checked

Every piece is checked for pinholes and chips before it leaves Willunga.

I throw every plate a little heavier than most potters would, so it holds the heat and does not chip. The glaze runs thin over the rim and pools in the rings, and no two come out of the kiln the same.

Mid-way through lunch

A plate wide enough for a proper lunch and a bowl deep enough for pasta, salad or soup. They stack, and they go in the oven to warm.

  • The butter yellow makes even a Tuesday salad look like a holiday. The bowls are the perfect size for pasta.

  • Heavy, solid and every one slightly different. The blue goes almost black where it pools, which is my favourite part.

Ben O., NorthcoteWillunga dinner set, cobalt, for 6

    Verified buyer, August 2026

  • Bought a set of four in tomato and two in cobalt to mix. They stack well and have survived two toddlers so far.

  • Gorgeous, though the olive took three weeks as it was in the next kiln. Worth it.

Questions about the Willunga dinner set

Or ask us at the shop, or by email. We answer within a working day.

Can it go in the dishwasher and oven?

Yes. Fired to 1,280 degrees, it is dishwasher, oven and microwave safe. Avoid going straight from the fridge to a hot oven.

Will my set match the photographs?

Closely. Each glaze pools a little differently in every kiln, so each plate has its own depth of colour, darker in the rings and lighter at the rim.

Can I mix glazes?

Yes. The four glazes are made to sit together. Order sets in different glazes, or choose them in the table builder.

Can I buy more later?

Yes. The range stays the same, so you can add plates, bowls or side plates to a set at any time.
