How every Sunday tablecloth is made

About a week from dyed yarn to a hemmed, washed cloth, most of it on the loom.

  1. Dyed

Flax yarn from Normandy is dyed in hanks before weaving, so the colour goes through every thread.

  2. Woven

Woven heavy on a 1960s loom, at 22 threads to the centimetre.

  3. Hemmed

A 3 cm double hem, folded and stitched by hand, with mitred corners.

  4. Washed

Stonewashed until it falls soft, then dried, folded and sent to the shop.

Find the tablecloth size for your table

Measure the top of your table. We suggest the cloth that leaves 20 to 35 cm hanging over every edge.

Ana Pereira, linen weaver, in Gawler

Made by Ana Pereira in Gawler

I weave it tight and heavy, then wash it with stones until it falls soft. A good tablecloth should go straight from the line to the table, creases and all, and last twenty years of Sundays.

Sunday tablecloth: on the table for a long lunch

On the table for a long lunch

Linen this heavy lies flat in a breeze and takes red wine, olive oil and a second helping. Shake it out, wash it warm and it comes back softer.

  • Twelve of us at a long lunch, red wine everywhere, and it came out of the wash looking better. The tomato is the happiest colour in our house.

  • Thick, soft and creases in a good way. I have stopped ironing it entirely.

  • We have a 2.8 metre table and the long size covers it with a proper drop. The olive is a true olive, not khaki.

  • Beautiful cloth. It shrank a touch on the first hot wash, so follow the card and wash it warm.

Questions about the Sunday tablecloth

Or ask us at the shop, or by email. We answer within a working day.

Which size do I need?

Add 50 to 60 cm to the length and width of your table, for a drop of 25 to 30 cm on every side. The size finder on this page works it out from your table.

Will it shrink?

Each cloth is washed before it leaves Gawler, so expect less than 2% more. Wash it warm, not hot.

Do I need to iron it?

No. Stonewashed linen is meant to look relaxed. Shake it out and hang it on the line, or iron it damp if you prefer it crisp.

Can I buy napkins on their own?

Yes, in sets of four or six, in any of the five colours. Add them here with the cloth, or choose them in the table builder.
