About Ovis wool rugs
Ovis rugs start as superfine merino from flocks around Ross, spun to a firm yarn and dyed in pots of lichen, madder, weld and indigo behind the workshop, as they have been since 1937. Hand-knotted rugs are tied at 80 to 100 knots a square inch on cotton warp; Buttongrass is woven flat on the floor loom and turns over.
Choose a hand-knotted rug for a living room or bedroom where you want depth underfoot, and a flatweave for a dining room, hall or study, where chairs move. Every rug is washed in rainwater, dried outside and checked before it is rolled for delivery.
Questions about choosing a rug
What size rug do I need for a living room?
Measure the seating area. A 200 × 300 cm rug takes the front legs of a three-seat sofa and two chairs, the most common choice. Go to 250 × 350 cm for an open room, or 160 × 230 cm to sit under a coffee table.
Hand-knotted or flatweave?
Hand-knotted rugs have a deep pile and feel soft underfoot. Flatweaves are thinner, lie flat under moving chairs and turn over, so they suit dining rooms, halls and studies.
Do I need an underlay?
For a flatweave or any rug on a hard floor, yes. A felt underlay stops it moving, adds cushioning and protects the floor. Each rug page offers one cut to size.
Can I return a rug?
Rugs from the ready-to-ship sizes can be returned within 30 days. Made-to-order and custom rugs are knotted for you, so they cannot be returned, which is why samples cost only $15.
