Care

Vacuum without the beater bar, and turn the rug every six months so it wears evenly. Blot spills straight away with cold water. Full care guide

Bay of Fires drawn to scale in your room

Choose a room and a size to see how much floor the rug covers, and which legs sit on it.

How every Bay of Fires rug is made

About 14 weeks from fleece to finished rug, most of it knot by knot on the loom.

  1. Spun

Midlands merino spun to a firm, even yarn.

  2. Dyed

Undyed wool, with orange from lichen and onion skin.

  3. Knotted

80 knots a square inch, tied by two weavers.

  4. Washed

Washed in rainwater and dried on the rail outside.

Isla Brennan knotting a rug on the loom

From the loom

Bay of Fires starts undyed. We only add the orange where the lichen would grow, so the flecks land a little differently on every rug, the way they do on the rocks.

  • Six months in and it still stops people at the door. The orange flecks are softer in person than in photographs, which we prefer.

  • We waited fourteen weeks and would wait again. It arrived with a card signed by both weavers and the dye lot written on the back.

    Tom and Priya R.Fitzroy, 250 × 350 cm

    Verified owner, July 2026

  • Thick, dense and quiet underfoot. It has changed the whole room, and the wool feels better every week.

  • Shed a little for the first month, as the card said it would, then settled. A rug we will keep for the rest of our lives.

Questions about Bay of Fires

How long does Bay of Fires take to make?

About 14 weeks from your order. The 200 × 300 cm size is kept ready to ship and leaves within five working days.

Will my rug look exactly like the photographs?

Close, but never exactly. Plant dyes shift a little from pot to pot, so the colour bands, and the placement of any flecks, differ slightly on every rug.

Will it shed?

A little, for the first few months, as loose fibres from the shearing work out. Vacuum on a low setting without the beater bar.

Can I have a different size or colour?

Yes. Any of our rugs can be made from 60 to 400 cm either way, in up to three of our twelve plant dyes. The custom rug page shows the price as you choose.

Do I need an underlay?

On a hard floor, yes. The felt underlay is cut to the size of your rug, stops it moving and adds cushioning.
