Care

Vacuum without the beater bar, and turn the rug every six months so it wears evenly. Blot spills straight away with cold water. Full care guide

Kelp drawn to scale in your room

Choose a room and a size to see how much floor the rug covers, and which legs sit on it.

How every Kelp rug is made

About 16 weeks from fleece to finished rug, most of it knot by knot on the loom.

  1. Spun

Midlands merino spun to a firm, even yarn.

  2. Dyed

Indigo over weld and eucalyptus, with undyed silk.

  3. Knotted

100 knots a square inch, tied by two weavers.

  4. Washed

Washed in rainwater and dried on the rail outside.

In a reading room by the water

Kelp at 200 × 300 cm, in sea green and teal. Deep enough to sit on, firm enough to take a sofa.

Isla Brennan knotting a rug on the loom

From the loom

Kelp has silk laid into the wool along each crest, so the waves catch the light as you walk past. It takes the longest of all our rugs, and it is the one people stop to touch.

  • The silk along the waves is something else at dusk. Worth every week of the wait.

  • Our reading room finally feels finished. The green is deep and changes with the weather outside.

  • The softest rug we have owned. Order the sample first: the colour is richer than any screen shows.

Questions about Kelp

How long does Kelp take to make?

About 16 weeks from your order.

Will my rug look exactly like the photographs?

Close, but never exactly. Plant dyes shift a little from pot to pot, so the colour bands, and the placement of any flecks, differ slightly on every rug.

Will it shed?

A little, for the first few months, as loose fibres from the shearing work out. Vacuum on a low setting without the beater bar.

Can I have a different size or colour?

Yes. Any of our rugs can be made from 60 to 400 cm either way, in up to three of our twelve plant dyes. The custom rug page shows the price as you choose.

Do I need an underlay?

On a hard floor, yes. The felt underlay is cut to the size of your rug, stops it moving and adds cushioning.
