The short answer
Lighting brands can show a fitting both lit and unlit, in a finished interior, without wiring or hanging it anywhere. The fixture itself is not altered: finish, proportion, shade material and cable are matched to the real product, while the room, the light it casts and the time of day are built around it. This is what makes it practical to show the same pendant at 2700K and at 4000K, or over a dining table and a kitchen island, which are the comparisons a customer is actually trying to make.
Why lighting fights the camera
Every category is awkward to photograph in its own way. Lighting is awkward because the product and the exposure are the same problem.
The product is the light source
A camera meters for one brightness. A lit fitting is far brighter than the room around it, so either the shade is a white blob or the room behind it is a black hole. Getting both takes bracketed frames and compositing, on every single shot.
On and off are two different products
A customer wants to know what it looks like glowing at night and what it looks like as an object at 11am. That is two setups per fitting, and most catalogues only ever show one.
Colour temperature decides the sale and never survives the photo
Warm white and cool white are completely different products to a buyer, and white balance in post flattens the difference. People order 4000K, receive something that feels clinical, and send it back.
Nothing can be photographed until it is installed
A pendant has to be hung and a wall light has to be mounted. Every environment means an electrician, or a rig, or a set built to be drilled into.

How do you photograph a light that is switched on?
Conventionally you bracket several exposures and composite them, because the fitting and the room sit several stops apart and no single frame holds both. Generated imagery builds the fixture and the light it casts as one scene instead, so the lit state is produced directly rather than assembled from frames that have to match.
Can you show the same fitting in warm white and cool white?
Yes, and it is one of the more useful things to do with the technique. Both versions come from the same base in the same room, so a customer sees the actual difference rather than reading 2700K and 4000K on a spec table and guessing.
Do you need the light to be installed somewhere first?
No. One clean photograph of the fitting is enough to start, along with the finish name, the shade material and the dimensions. Nothing has to be hung, wired or mounted.
Will the light look physically plausible in the room?
That is the part that takes the work. Where the light falls, how far it reaches and what it does to the surfaces near it are checked frame by frame, because a fitting that glows without lighting anything is the single most obvious failure in this category.
What about the fitting itself, does it get altered?
