UGC vs studio vs AI creative: which performs better on Meta, and what's the cost per winning ad?

By Dan BartleyUpdated 3 minute read

The short answer

No source wins everywhere. UGC tends to win when buyers need to see a person use or vouch for the product; studio and AI-made product creative tend to win when buyers choose on looks, materials and setting. Compare suppliers on cost per winning ad: creative cost plus test spend, divided by the share of creatives that beat your control.

How do we calculate cost per winning ad?

Add what each creative costs to make to the test spend it needs, then divide by your hit rate. A creative that costs little but rarely wins can cost more per winner than an expensive one that often does.

A$50010%10$6,500
B$502%50$10,000
C$1506%About 17$5,000

Test spend is the part people leave out, and it is often the larger number. For a sense of real hit rates, Motion’s 2026 benchmarks put the average between 4% and 8.8% of creatives depending on spend, so most creatives from any source will not win.

When does UGC perform best?

When the product needs a person to show it working, explain it or vouch for it: skincare, supplements, gadgets, fit-led apparel and anything with a before and after.

The costs go beyond the creator’s fee. Each new concept means a new brief, product shipped to the creator and days of waiting, and running the video as a paid ad needs usage rights agreed in writing. That makes UGC strong for proven angles and slow for testing many new ones. UGC video against studio product video has its own answer.

When do studio or AI-made product ads perform best?

When buyers choose on how the product will look in their life: furniture, homewares, lighting, rugs, bedding and fashion styling.

Studio photography gives the most control, but every new setting means another shoot, which caps how many concepts you can afford to test. AI-made scenes built from phone photos of the real product remove that cap: the same sofa can sit in ten different rooms for ten different buyers.

The condition is accuracy. The environment can change and the product cannot, so every frame has to match the real item’s colour, size and materials. Bartley Studio re-edits any image that fails to match the real product until it does, with no cap and no extra fee.

Should we run one source or a mix?

A mix, because each source reaches people the others miss. Meta’s creative diversification checklist lists creator-led and brand-led lo-fi content alongside polished product and lifestyle video, and treats variety across them as the way to reach new audiences.

In practice, use product creative to test many angles quickly, then brief creators on the angles that win, where a person on camera adds proof the product shots cannot.

How do we test suppliers against each other fairly?

Give each supplier the same product, offer and brief, test their creatives in the same campaign with the same spend per creative, and compare cost per winner over several batches rather than one.

  • Same product and offer, so the creative is the only difference
  • Same campaign and audience, with spend split evenly per creative
  • A winner defined before the test, such as beating the control’s CPA at a set spend
  • Two or three batches from each, because one batch can be luck
  • Speed counted too: a supplier that delivers in days gives you more tests each quarter

The setup for running those tests is covered in the best creative testing setup.

What if we need someone talking to camera?

Use a creator. Bartley Studio does not make generated spokespeople talking to camera; its ad creative covers the product side, with statics and video built from photos of your products.

Other questions people ask about this

Does AI creative cost less than UGC?

Per asset it often does, because there is no creator fee, product shipping or usage licence to pay. What matters is cost per winner, so compare the two in the same test rather than on the invoice.

Can we run a creator’s video as a paid ad?

Only with paid usage rights agreed in writing: which platforms, for how long and whether you can edit it. Running it as a partnership ad from the creator’s own account also needs their permission in Meta.

Will people trust our ads less if AI was used?

The real risk is an ad that misrepresents the product, which is why the product has to stay exactly true to life while the setting changes. Whether shoppers can tell, and whether they care, has its own answer.
