Quick answers on AI imagery and ads
Short answers to the questions that do not need a whole page.
AI tool or done-for-you service: what's the difference?
A tool gives you the generator; a service gives you finished frames. With a tool, you write the prompts, reject the failures, check the product in every image and fix what drifted. Bartley Studio checks every frame against your real product, finishes it by hand and re-edits any image that does not match, with no cap and no extra fee.

They can, if the image shows a product different from the one that arrives, and customers in Australia and New Zealand have a legal right to a remedy when goods do not match their description. Accurate AI images carry no more risk than accurate photos. Check colour, size, materials and every word of text in each frame before it goes live.
Read the full answerCan I use AI images on Amazon, Google Shopping, eBay or Etsy?
Usually, if the image shows the exact item. Google requires the main image to clearly display the exact item being sold and AI-generated images to carry AI metadata, and eBay's picture policy bans photos that do not accurately represent the item. Amazon and Etsy set their own image and AI rules, so read the current policy in Seller Central or the Etsy Seller Handbook before you upload.
Do AI product images in Google Merchant Center need a metadata tag, and does Shopify keep it?
Yes. Google requires every AI-generated product image in its Shopping feeds to carry the IPTC DigitalSourceType tag trainedAlgorithmicMedia, and not to have it removed. Developers reported in 2026 that Shopify's image CDN stripped this metadata, and Shopify staff said in July 2026 a fix should be live. Check by downloading an image from the URL in your feed and reading its metadata.
Selling into Europe: what does the EU AI Act mean for AI product photos?
Article 50 of the EU AI Act has applied since 2 August 2026, and it requires deployers of AI to disclose deepfakes: content resembling existing persons, objects, places, entities or events that would falsely appear authentic, as the European Commission defines it. Whether a styled scene of a real product meets that test, and how it applies to a store outside the EU, is not settled. If Europe is a real market, get advice and consider a clear disclosure.
Read the full answerScam stores use AI images. Will customers think my store is fake?
They might if your images look generated and nothing else on the store looks real: the ACCC has flagged "ghost stores" that use generative AI images of fictional owners and shopfronts. Accurate product frames, finished by hand, do not look like that. Back them with real signals: your ABN, a real address, clear delivery and returns terms, and genuine reviews.
Read the full answerCan I use AI images commercially?
Usually, but it depends on the tool's terms and on what is in the image. Each AI tool sets its own rules on commercial use and ownership, and they change; Shopify, for example, says it does not claim ownership of images made with its media generation or restrict where you use them. Avoid images that copy a real person, a brand or someone else's artwork.
Read the full answerIs it OK to put my real product photo on an AI-generated background?
Yes, as long as the product stays exactly as photographed and nothing in the scene implies it comes with items it does not. The risk is the join: light, shadows and scale that do not match make the product look pasted in. Match the light direction, add a real contact shadow and check the product's size against the room.
Read the full answerWhy does AI virtual staging look fake (lighting, shadows, scale)?
Because the furniture and the room were lit separately and never joined up. Fake staging gives itself away through light from the wrong direction, shadows that float or are missing where the piece meets the floor, a scale that does not match the doors and windows, and surfaces that are too smooth. Each of these can be fixed by hand.
Read the full answerCan we use AI-generated people, or a lookalike of a real person, in our ads?
Generated people are usable if they resemble no one real and are never presented as customers. A lookalike of a real person can suggest an endorsement that does not exist, and the Australian Consumer Law prohibits false or misleading representations about testimonials and sponsorship or approval (ACCC guide). If Meta's own tools add a photorealistic AI person, Meta labels it beside "Sponsored".
Read the full answerAre AI images bad for SEO?
No. Google's guidance does not ban AI-generated content; its spam rules target content made at scale to manipulate rankings. For e-commerce, Google requires AI-generated product images to carry IPTC metadata and asks that AI-written text, including alt text, be checked for accuracy. Use descriptive file names and alt text, and compress images so pages load fast.
Do AI-generated video ads need a label on TikTok or Meta?
On TikTok, yes: ads with video that is completely AI-generated or significantly modified by AI need the AI-generated content label or your own clear disclaimer, and undisclosed AI content is rejected or restricted. Meta adds its AI info label itself when a video is made or significantly edited with its own generative tools, and says it will begin detecting third-party AI too.
Read the full answerWill AI replace product photographers?
For much catalogue and lifestyle work, it already does: room scenes, colourways and seasonal refreshes no longer need a shoot. Photographers still do what AI should not fake: real people, real places and real events. The skills that matter in AI imagery are a photographer's anyway: light, styling, composition and an eye for what looks real.
