Does Meta label or penalise ads that use AI images?

By Dan BartleyUpdated 4 minute read

The short answer

Meta labels some AI ads, and it has not said it penalises them. An "AI info" label appears on ads made or significantly edited with Meta's own generative AI tools, beside the Sponsored tag when Meta's tools add a photorealistic AI person. In June 2026 Meta said it will also begin detecting third-party AI through industry signals. Its pages on these labels say nothing about delivery or ranking.

When does Meta add the AI info label to an ad?

When an image or video in the ad was fully created or materially edited with Meta's own generative AI creative features. Minor edits made with Meta's tools, such as resizing or colour correction, do not trigger it, according to Meta's help page.

Meta's help page also notes the feature is being introduced gradually, and that not every ad using its generative features will carry AI info.

Does Meta label AI images made outside its own tools?

Meta has said it will. Its help page still says ads made with third-party AI tools are not labelled, but Meta's June 2026 update says it will begin detecting them automatically through industry-standard signals and show the label within a new "About this ad" section in each ad's menu.

Meta has not named the signals, and the update says the experience may vary by region because of legal requirements. Plan as if any AI image carrying provenance metadata from the tool that made it can be labelled.

Does Meta penalise or limit delivery for ads with AI images?

Meta has not said it does. Neither its help page nor its newsroom post on AI labels mentions delivery, ranking or cost, and Meta builds generative AI tools into Ads Manager for advertisers to use in their ads.

What does cost an account is the creative itself. An image that looks generated, with smeared text, waxy surfaces or a product that changes from frame to frame, tends to earn weaker CTR and more negative feedback, and that shows up in CPM and CPA whichever tool made it. Judge AI creative on the same numbers as everything else.

Does Andromeda treat AI creative differently?

Not that Meta has said. What Meta has said is that as businesses upload more creatives to support a diversification strategy, Andromeda, its ad retrieval system, works behind the scenes to pick the best creative for each person (Meta, March 2025).

That is where AI earns its place in an account: it makes more genuinely different concepts affordable. Ten crops of one AI scene give the system little to choose between; ten different settings, angles and hooks give it real options, and give you more chances to find a winner.

Will the AI info label hurt CTR or ROAS?

There is no published data from Meta on this, so test it rather than assume. In most cases the label sits inside the ad's menu, where only people who open the menu see it; the visible version is the one beside Sponsored for photorealistic AI people.

  • If the visible label is the concern, keep Meta's tools from adding people to your ads
  • Run the same concept with and without Meta's generative enhancements, and compare CTR, CPA and ROAS at meaningful spend
  • Read results at the ad level: a label on one ad tells you nothing about the rest of the set

Should we use Meta's own generative AI creative tools?

Use them where they cannot change the product, and review every enhancement before launch. Meta's own help page says that although enhancements try to keep the core message of an ad, the media and text you upload may be adjusted, and some enhancements are on by default.

For product ads, check hardest the enhancements that generate new pixels, such as generated backgrounds, image expansion and image animation, because they add image content around the product or set it in motion. How to switch them off, for one ad or in bulk, is in how do we turn off Advantage+ creative enhancements and AI backgrounds?

Other questions people ask about this

Why did Meta put AI info on an ad we made ourselves?

Most likely a generative enhancement was on for that ad, and Meta labels ads materially edited with its generative features. Since June 2026 it may also come from Meta detecting AI signals in the file, if a generative feature in your editing software added them.

Can we remove the AI info label?

Meta's pages describe no way to remove it once it applies. The lever they do describe is not using Meta's generative features on that ad.

Do we have to disclose AI ourselves in Meta ads?

Not for standard product ads; Meta applies the label itself. Ads about social issues, elections or politics are different: advertisers are required to disclose when an image, video or audio has been digitally created or altered.

Does Meta treat AI video the same way as AI images?

Yes. Meta's labels cover images and videos created or significantly edited with its generative AI features.
