How do I make video ads without a film shoot, or without footage of my product?

By Dan BartleyUpdated 4 minute read

The short answer

Start from the photos you have. Meta’s Ads Manager can turn still images into simple template videos for free, and AI can now generate real motion from product photos: the product turning, a fabric moving, the piece in a room. If you have never held the product, get a sample or accurate photos first, because an ad has to show what customers will receive.

What are the ways to make a video ad without filming?

Five, from free to paid: Meta’s own templates, motion graphics built from your photos, AI video generated from your photos, footage from your supplier, and creators who film the product for you.

Can Meta make a video ad from my photos?

Yes, a simple one. Meta’s Ads Manager has video templates that turn images into short mobile-first videos, which you customise with your images, backgrounds, logos and text.

They are a reasonable first test and cost nothing to make. The limit is that the product itself never moves: the template animates the frame around it. When the selling point is how a fabric drapes or how a sofa sits in a room, you need real motion.

How does AI turn product photos into a video ad?

An AI video model takes a photo of the product as its starting point and generates a few seconds of motion from a written direction. A finished ad is several of those shots, planned in order, then cut, timed and finished in an edit.

The risk is the product itself. AI can drift on labels, logos, patterns and proportions from one frame to the next, so every frame has to be checked against the real item, and any shot where the product changes is cut or remade. Whether AI can turn your photos into a video ad covers what works and what does not.

Can I make video ads before I have the product in hand?

Only from accurate photos of the exact product, such as photos of a production sample. An ad built from guesswork can show something customers will not receive, and an ad that misleads breaches the Australian Consumer Law whether a camera or AI made it.

A sample that matches the production run is enough: a couple of phone photos of it, taken in daylight, can become product video before the stock lands. If the colour or finish changes in production, update the ads. If you dropship, order one unit before you advertise it, so you know whether the supplier’s photos tell the truth. Whether AI images of your product are legal in Australia and New Zealand sets out the rules.

What makes a video ad work when nothing was filmed?

The same things that make any video ad work: the product in the first seconds, one clear message and a reason to buy now. Meta’s creative checklist suggests 6 to 10 seconds for direct-response ads and highlighting the brand within the first three seconds.

  • Open on the product, not a logo animation or a slow fade in
  • Make the vertical 9:16 version first, because Reels and Stories are built for it
  • Put the message in on-screen text, because the same checklist advises designing Feed and Stories ads for sound off
  • Make several versions with different openings, and let the results decide

How to make a good video ad goes through each part in order.

Where can I get video ads made from my product photos?

Bartley Studio makes them, from a couple of phone photos of each product or the photos already on your store. Each video is planned, directed, generated and edited in-house, as a 9:16 hook for Reels, Stories and phones or a 16:9 loop for the homepage and desktop product pages.

One 6-second video is $430, one 10-second video is $500 and three 10-second videos are $830, in AUD excluding GST, delivered in days rather than weeks. There are no generated spokespeople talking to camera; for that, work with a creator.

Other questions people ask about this

Can I use my supplier’s videos in my ads?

Only if your permission from the supplier covers paid advertising. Even then, other stockists may run the same footage, so your ads will look like theirs.

Is a slideshow of photos good enough as a video ad?

It can work for offers and ranges, where the message is the price or the choice. It is weaker when buyers need to see the product move, because nothing in the frame does.

Do AI video ads need a label?

It depends on the platform, and the rules changed during 2026. The disclosure answer sets out what Meta, Google and TikTok each label or require.
